If you live in the US you’ve probably heard that despite a court order, the Federal government is not paying Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits as of 11/1. 12% is the US population relies on this for food. That’s more than 1 out of 10 people. If you walk along an average street this means every 10th person you pass relies on this food.
I personally donated $200 to my town’s food bank yesterday. Often money is better than food as it can be used more strategically based on need. I also usually donate two boxes of cereal every week. The food banks are not setup to handle 12% of the population suddenly needing food. I urge you to give to your local food bank if you can until this crises passes. Most towns have a food bank with a website that will say what and how to donate.
Food should not be an issue in our country. The wealth of Elon Musk could fund SNAP for 5 years. The wealth of Larry Ellison could fund SNAP for 3.2 years. Jeff Bezos, Larry Page, Mark Zuckerburg, and Sergey Brin could each fund SNAP for over 2 years! Our president’s bailout for Argentina could pay for SNAP benefits for almost half a year!
