Here’s an audio of the one act play version of Fixing the System. I hope you enjoy! Here are some reviews:
Fun Home
I “won” tickets to The Huntington and a limo ride in a recent silent auction for Hopkinton Center for the Arts. I took a friend with me to see Fun Home. She had never been in a limo before and didn’t know who Alison Bechdel is! Alison Bechdel is a cartoonist famous for inventing the Bechdel test. On the way to the theatre I explained the Bechdel test and my limited understanding of the musical.
Fun Home is based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir of the same name. It is about her growing up, and not coming out as a lesbian until she was at Oberlin college. Her father, Bruce, was an English teacher and a funeral home director. He was a closeted homosexual or bisexual man, which she didn’t discover until after she came out. Growing up she rebelled against the feminine, which he often pushed her towards.
My favorite songs were Changing My Major and Ring of Keys. The cast was phenomenal, especially Lyla Randall who played “small Alison”. While the curtain has just come down on The Huntington’s production of Fun Home, I recommend seeing it if it opens near you. Content warning: Suicide.
The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune - It pulled on the heart strings, I may have cried, definitely was in the feels. This really flips the script of having supernatural beings as an aristocracy and instead being othered. The main character is very relatable, a middle aged single gay man who follows the rules without questioning them ... until he’s pushed to by what becomes his found family.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man: Old School/New School by Christos Gage - Not my favorite version of Peter Parker (or the spider-people, Spider Gwen being my favorite), but his struggle is relatable. One thing I loved about this comic was Nico, who I hadn’t come across in other books. I really enjoyed her part of the story. The other thing I loved about this comic was that it didn’t end with a cliffhanger.
