Still Life of Simon's Birth

A Poem
Me Holding Simon after his Birth in 2000

Moment of joy,
Moment of pain,
Moment of birth,
Moment of fear.

A mother with high blood pressure,
A doctor pushing Pitocin,
A couple unaware the risk,
A medicated IV drip.

Preclampsia leads to caesarean,
Caesarean leads to hemorrhaging,
Hemorrhaging leads to other mother feeding,
Feeding leads to tears in the dark.

We should be three,
We could be two,
We had wishes for one,
We almost had none.

Hard to breathe,
Enveloped in darkness,
Rocking in silence,
Holding the newborn son.

Would birth mother survive?
Would baby thrive?
Would formula sustain?
Would I survive the strain?
